The Jumeirah Carlton Tower on Sloane Street is one of London’s most elegant and exclusive hotels, with 216 rooms that include 58 suites and a Royal Suite. Following LHL’s previous refresh of the rooms, suites and corridors in 2002, we were asked back to update them again.
This time around, the aim was to increase the sense of contemporary luxury and comfort in the guestrooms by refreshing the mood, textures and colours. We felt there was no need for a full-scale refurbishment. There was merit in preserving the feature headboards and nightstands, and the existing marble in the bathrooms. We were able to give the rooms a more contemporary personality simply by introducing a dark cognac colour to the millwork.
We developed colour schemes for the fabrics and carpets of cinnamon and gold, and lavender and taupe, and selected designs that were contemporary but also easy to be around.
Comfort and ease are important to us as designers, especially in rooms such as those in this hotel. We introduced well-lit makeup areas and refreshment areas with mini-bars, ‘temptation larders’, coffee machines and crockery, all meticulously designed for ease of use as well as to be easy on the eye.
